WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?
A dental crown is a protective cap for a worn-down, damaged, or decayed tooth. The crown can be made of various materials, such as porcelain, metal, zirconia, and many others.
Crowns work by increasing the strength and durability of a tooth, holding a broken tooth together, covering up imperfections like discoloration or cracks, and protecting a vulnerable tooth from further damage.
A crown can provide more support for a tooth that has become worn down or weakened after dental trauma or a root canal. This protects it from chewing and grinding forces that could lead to breakage. Contact us at Glen Valley Dentistry to schedule a consultation with Dr. Shaun Williams.

HOW IT WORKS: THE DENTAL CROWN PROCESS
Dentist Caledonia

CONSULTATION
At your consultation, Dr. Williams will examine your tooth to determine if you’re a good candidate for dental crowns.

ENAMELOPLASTY
Before we can place a dental crown, we will need to file down your tooth to create room for the crown.

IMPRESSIONS
After preparing your tooth, we will take impressions that are sent to a dental lab to create your custom-fit dental crown that blends in with your natural teeth. While you wait for your crown, we will place an immediate temporary one.

CROWN PLACEMENT
Once your crown is ready, you will return for another appointment to have the crown fitted and bonded to your tooth.

HOW LONG WILL MY CROWN LAST?
Because crowns can be used to address aesthetic and restorative concerns, certain materials are superior for different reasons. Porcelain crowns offer the best aesthetics while metal crowns are the most durable and long-lasting.
Depending on the material you choose, they can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The way you look after your teeth will also play a role in the wear and tear of your dental crown. By regularly brushing, flossing, and attending dental cleanings, your teeth and crowns are less likely to run into issues. You should also avoid teeth grinding (wear a mouthguard), smoking, chewing hard or sticky foods, and using your teeth as tools.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T GET A DENTAL CROWN?
This depends on the reason you’re interested in dental crowns. If it’s purely for aesthetic reasons, then you may just have to endure the aesthetic imperfections of your smile or choose some other cosmetic treatment that can improve this.
However, if you have structural problems with your teeth, then failing to get a dental crown can lead to enamel erosion, chips cracks, or broken teeth. You may cause more damage to your tooth which requires treatment like root canal therapy or extraction. You will also likely suffer from tooth pain and sensitivity.
